Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Lupus is an autoimmune rheumatic disease that affects about 1 out of 1000 people worldwide. About 9 times as many women as men have lupus. This disease is the central focus of research in my laboratory. My interests are centered on the characterization of proteins and other particles that are recognized by the immune system of these patients, factors that may affect the dramatically high levels of antibodies that are made to these proteins, and a more thorough understanding of the consequences of these autoimmune reactions. (C lick here for some recent publications from my laboratory). For patients, their relatives, and others interested in this disease, I have compiled a partial list of internet sites with information on SLE, and other sites that contain some updates from ongoing research.
